One of the first things one learns in marketing and advertising roles is “KISS”: Keep it simple, stupid. Sometimes less is more, and that’s exactly what singer/songwriter Jack Symes excels at in his new single. A warm, feelgood love song peppered with bright brass and sweet harmonies, “Baby, My Baby” is a great way to start your morning right.

I’m heading out for the city
To see my baby, I miss my baby
Heading out for the city on a lonely night
the city ain’t no friend of mine
the tin men walk, judge and watch
All the crazies dancing and say they’re f**ked
Well I’d say we’re all quite f**ked

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Baby, My Baby,” Jack Symes’ first single of 2020 and his latest studio release since his debut album, Songs for Moms, dropped last February. A New York City-based folk artist hailing from Los Angeles, Symes commands attention through heartwarming lyrics, colorful melodies, and irrefutable charm. His music has grown tremendously since he debuted in 2016, when it was just him and his guitar: Songs like “Roll Me Away” and “Sugar Mama” from last year’s album and “Baby, My Baby” highlight Symes’ collaborative spirit, and the places he will go when given the opportunity to expand his sound.

“Baby, My Baby” is, in a word, sublime.

With its effervescent bounce and bold horn section, Symes’ latest radiates a message of devotion, contentment, and taking pleasure in the small and simple things – like being present and in-the-moment with the person you care about the most. Meanwhile, Symes’ lyrics tackle the stress and strain of a long-distance relationship, and all the doubt clouding his mind:

I’m heading out for the city
To see my baby, I lost my baby
Heading out for the city on a lonely night
Ghosts of lovers they follow me
They say i’m guilty, i know i’m guilty
They say i’m wrong for thinking that love is free
Don’t ya tell me what love should be

“I wrote “Baby, My Baby” over the course of a couple years, starting between a move from the Bay Area back home to LA,” Symes tells Atwood Magazine. “I wanted it to be a fun, joyful sounding song and kind of disguising that not so joyful idea of being caught up with that distant, special someone. It’s one of my favorite songs I’ve been able to record and I’m really lucky to have been able to track it with some incredible friends and musicians. The sound is absolutely inspired by folks like Nathaniel Rateliff, Van Morrison, Hiss Golden Messenger, etc. I think this song is a fitting first taste of this next batch of songs I’ll be releasing throughout this year.”

Despite the tense undercurrent running through the song’s words, “Baby, My Baby” shines like the sun. Symes injects his music with the kind of easy-going, uplifting charisma that can bring us through our own dark times, and up into better ones ahead. As the lead single off Symes’ forthcoming sophomore album, “Baby, My Baby” is sure to become a staple of our 2020 summer soundtracks and playlists, and a song we can be excited to play on repeat as it lifts our spirits and fills the room with light and good energy.

It’s simple, sweet, and downright seductive: Stream Jack Symes’ “Baby, My Baby” exclusively on Atwood Magazine!

You got me baby
But i don’t got you
You got me baby
But all i want is you
You got me baby
But i don’t got you
I got nothing lately
And all I want is you
