Dear reader, I’m going to level with you.

When you write about music every day for over a decade, some of the songs you champion – no matter how much you may have loved them at the time – eventually fade from memory. The attention economy works that way, with shiny new objects obscuring so much of what came before them.

But #1 Dads never faded from view. Tom Iansek’s “Freedom Fighter,” off 2020’s Golden Repair, carries one of the most memorable melodies I’ve ever heard, and six years later, I still return to his music time and again.

Now #1 Dads is back, and the beautifully enchanting “Already Something” makes that long absence disappear in an instant. Released July 22 via Pieater, Iansek’s first single under the moniker in six years is a refreshing burst of sunlight, dreamy and charming with a gentle, sun-soaked soulfulness. Motown lives in its bones, but Iansek brings that classic warmth fully into his own world, singing with an openness that makes this stirring tribute to enduring love incredibly easy to fall head over heels for.

“‘Already Something’ was first born during COVID, from daily meanderings on the piano,” Iansek tells Atwood Magazine. “The track name was also the working title, and was given as the idea I recorded on my phone at the time was already another idea I had previously had (although slightly different).”

“I then morphed this title into the basis for the lyrics, where instead of looking to go build something new (a relationship, that is), you could build on something that already existed, something that already had the foundations set.”

What began as a loose piano sketch ultimately finds its emotional center in the possibility of renewal – the realization that a future can sometimes grow from what has been waiting there all along. That possibility sits at the heart of the song’s patient, hopeful pull – cracking wide open in the chorus, where Iansek exchanges uncertainty for calm conviction and draws strength from the history he and his partner already share. His voice glides above the arrangement, carrying the song out of private reflection and into a soul-stirring, openhearted affirmation.

While Iansek sings with effortless warmth, the full ensemble gives “Already Something” breathtaking depth.

Isaac Barter’s cello and double bass, Kimberly Kai Cao’s violin, Luis Almau’s flute, Antoine Katz’s bass, Lloyd Haines’s drums, and Georgia Potter’s background vocals gather around Iansek with graceful, awe-inspiring finesse, each performance deepening the song while leaving his tender voice at its center. Angus Rigby’s saxophone takes flight in a dramatic solo, blazing through the arrangement with the same soulful command that made his turn on “Camberwell” (off 2014’s sophomore album About Face) a fan favorite.

At its core, “Already Something” celebrates love proven through pressure. “No fear there is already something here / We built it, we own it, our blood and tears” frames partnership as a life assembled together, its strength made visible through every difficult season survived side by side. By the time Iansek reaches “Who did I find / At the end of the fire / It’s only ever been you,” romance lands as recognition: After every move, strain, and upheaval, the person beside him remains home.

“Already Something” is a radiant reintroduction to an artist whose songcraft has always carried uncommon weight – and whose influence reaches far beyond this one project. An acclaimed Melbourne-born, now London-based singer/songwriter and producer, Tom Iansek has spent nearly two decades shaping Australian independent music – both as co-founder of indie label Pieater, and through his projects Big Scary, No Mono, and #1 Dads. He once described #1 Dads to Atwood Magazine as his “main vessel for my creativity and self-expression,” and its long-awaited fourth album, Every Little Fire, arrives October 16 via Pieater after a transatlantic relocation, a growing family, and the vertigo of dismantling one life to build another.

“‘Already Something’ is the only true love song on the record,” Iansek says, calling it “a tribute to my partner of many years.” “Moving through difficult things as a partnership can challenge that partnership, but it can build strength and resilience.”

Its melody smiles, its soft strings bloom, and the saxophone lifts the whole room, but Iansek’s devotion ultimately gives this breathtaking performance its lasting power.
