The beautiful thing about life is that if you give things time, they pass and the wounds heal.

will hyde’s latest single feels like an almost unreasonable amount of fun, given its subject matter. After all, seldom do we truly “celebrate” the act of getting over someone – especially when we’re still not over them! – but maybe we’ve been going about our post-breakups all wrong. A feelgood breath of fresh air, “over u.” dwells in a bath of indie pop euphoria while reeling in the throes of lost love. It’s a summer jam and a true mixed bag of emotions all in one – showcasing the young. fast-emerging Australian artist as a catchy, quirky, and promising talent.

16 but I knew you since the second grade
You and me go way back yeah this ain’t no game
And when I had you I thought I had it all
Never seen a girl look like you before
but then suddenly we changed
we grew our different ways
now we’re not the same
i wish we never aged
you’re inside my head
you’re driving me mad
i wish you were dead (wait, what?)

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “over u.,” will hyde’s third overall single and the latest offering taken from his upcoming, newly-announced debut EP with u in mind, out this October via Pack Records. A 20-year-old artist hailing from Melbourne, hyde (who stylizes his name in all lowercase) debuted just two months ago in June with the song “easy for u.”, introducing himself as a left-of-center pop artist loosely in the molds of Troye Sivan, E^ST, Ruel, and other fellow Australian acts. Warm, heavily affected guitars lightly glisten alongside a wash of produced sonics and cool trap-adjacent electronic percussion to make an arrangement that feels distinctly of-the-moment – and it is upon a bed of similar pop instrumentation that hyde sings his new song’s feverish chorus:

i thought that I was over you
but now I’m missing what I’m used to
you make me feel like such a fool
kills me to feel the way i do
i thought I was over you
cause I can’t get you outta my head
when all I want to do is forget
why do I have to always regret
you make me miserable
when i’m in love with you

Every will hyde song to date has offered its own universe of sound – starting with “easy for u.” and moving through last month’s pulsing, impassioned “meant to be.” with its undulating, curious chorus sonics. In comparison to its predecessors, “over u.” now presents hyde at his most accessible – with an intoxicating top-line, a relatively familiar and relatable storyline, and simple guitar-and-clap instrumentation that gets straight to the heart of the matter.

“When I wrote this song, I had been away from home for quite a long time,” hyde tells Atwood Magazine. “That space had given me a lot of time to think about everything, including the past. I noticed there were certain relationships that I was holding onto, and it meant that I was not being present. The only times I was present was when I was in the studio; that’s the only time I could really enjoy… so I got out of the shower one morning before a session with Liam Quinn, and had a melody in my head – the chorus of what would be ‘over u.’ In the second verse I really am just sort of stating the frustration I was feeling – like, “You’re driving me insane. I’m driving me insane.” The way I got full clarity was using this song as a point to be like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna start making sure I’m bringing myself back to this present moment now. I gotta make a change and stop thinking about these relationships in my life.’

i think i think about you every fucking day
i would let you go if I had my way
but still you stay, keeping me insane
i numb my pain, but you never ever fade
but then suddenly we changed
we grew our different ways
now we’re not the same
i wish we never aged
you’re inside my head
you’re driving me mad
i wish you were dead (wait, what?)

Not only is “over u.” a song striving to get past an ex, but it’s also (and more importantly) a song about getting back in touch with oneself. will hyde picks himself up and dusts himself off more than once in his third single, inviting all to listen to join him in this hard reset.

In quite the tongue-in-cheek fashion, hyde’s lyric video for “over u.” finds the artist on CCTV footage, presumably outside and around the house of a would-be ex. We watch as various attempts at communication or reconnection fail – from addressing the cameras head-on, to climbing up to the windows, and so on – and ultimately, hyde’s resilient fingers wave in the air as he bids the cameras and his ex a… fond farewell.

hyde’s debut ep with u in mind. is out this October. Until then, we’ll be singing ourselves hoarse with his unnervingly catchy new earworm of a song: “over u.” truly is an unreasonable amount of fun, and we’re living for every minute of it. Come join will hyde and bask in the present, exclusively through Atwood Magazine!
