Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering Emi Meyer’s new single “When I Lose Control” featuring Keb’ Mo’, the artist’s fourth single of 2020. A singer/songwriter born in Kyoto and based in Seattle, with roots tying her to both Japan and the United States, Emi Meyer has weaved an illustrious and unique career for herself over the past ten years, bridging worlds and melting together genres as she embraced jazz, pop, the blues, and much more. Since she debuted in 2009, she has collaborated with a slew of highly acclaimed artists – working with Colbie Caillat and Yael Naim, as well as Grammy Award-winning sound engineer Husky Höskulds (Norah Jones and Sheryl Crow); beyond that, Meyer’s album Monochrome debuted at #1 upon its release in Japan.
Her latest follows in the path of 2020’s recent releases “Original,” “Soul Naturale,” and “Nashville Lullaby” – highlighting Meyer’s lyrical and vocal strengths in a soul / blues context. Recorded in Nashville with blues legend and Grammy Award winner Keb’ Mo’, “When I Lose Control” highlights the effects and impacts of anxiety on our day-to-day lives, and the relief we get for those seconds when we stop worrying and are at peace. Meyer’s voice soars as she croons confidently over a bed of pulsing guitars, horns, and drums.

“This is a song I co-wrote with Keb’Mo’. I was a huge fan of his recordings and so when I got to the studio I was impressed to find he had a seed idea for a song already waiting,” Meyer tells Atwood Magazine. “He had just gotten back from a tour in Europe a couple days before! The lyric writing was done together, and he helped me through the process of recording by emphasizing the groove and singing in the pocket. It was an extremely life changing experience and I was grateful to have such hands-on coaching in the studio. It is exactly what I hoped for from my Nashville experience. You can hear the rhythm in Keb’Mo’s recordings channeled in this song.”
“When I Lose Control” brushes stress and strain with a swath of feelgood charm, basking in the good times and casting off the bad. It’s appreciative without being naïve, yet what really make the music pop is the marriage between the instruments themselves, and then the Meyer’ finessed, raw vocal performance on top. The band is lively and groovy, capturing the essence of the song with expressive passion as Meyer sings a little freer than she has in the passed (in the pocket, as she notes). The result is an expansive, inviting experience in which all may indulge and let go, even if that only lasts a few minutes.
