I distill lives from my well. It was dripping only black, now I’m bare with my illness…

A haunting, heavy weight hangs over the air as Painted Vein casts his sonic brush over our ears.

Gritty and grungy, “My Well” aches with the pain of the world as the Seattle-based artist dwells in a darkness of his own design. It’s an intense upheaval from within; the eruption of inner turmoil and torment exposed and expunged through sound. An all-consuming, emotionally charged reckoning, “My Well” is the visceral exhale of a tortured soul letting go, allowing others in just a bit so that we may feel what he feels, see what he sees, and understand the world the way he understands it.

And oh, how it hurts.

My Well – Painted Vein
Have you heard about that man?
He was blue with a red hand
He was coming from the woods
Maybe he was just you
Do you want to be my friend?
I distill lives from my well
It was dripping only black
Now I’m bare with my illness

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “My Well,” Painted Vein’s sixth career single and the latest song taken off his forthcoming debut album, Dripping Only Black (set to release November 15th, 2024 via WWNBB and AWAL).

Since debuting his new musical project just six months ago, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and audio engineer Andrea Fox Volpato (formerly the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the Italian band New Candys) has enchanted and consumed audiences’ ears and hearts with his special brand of alternative fury: We hear grunge, dream pop, shoegaze, gauzy naughties indie rock, and more in songs like “Lay Down,” “Hey Man,” and “Where Is My Soul?” – all of which serve to highlight another side to Painted Vein’s burgeoning style and sound. He even released a cover of Nirvana’s “Something in the Way,” the penultimate track off Nevermind.

Did you come?
What did I miss?
Did you come?

“My Well” sees Painted Vein at his darkest and most hard-hitting; drums pulse a heavy beat and supercharged electric guitars roar as Volpato bares his soul through vividly expressive observational and emotive lyrics:

Have you heard about that gang?
All poor children with no roof
All their childhood being abused
Maybe they need some glue
Did you come?
What did I miss?
Did you come?

“The song is comprised of a melancholic and powerful melody, with lyrics conveying a person shouldering the weight of the world,” the artist tells Atwood Magazine. “The music video, recorded by IM DONE and edited by Andrea Volpato and Alice Lorenzon, captures the intensity of the music, taking the audience on a trip to the depth and darkness of life (‘Dripping Only Black’), while imparting a sense of hope and justice (‘I want to live again’).”

Indeed, the final moments of the song showcase a desire to look up and feel hope and beauty once more as the artist sings, “I want to live again,” crying out in an all-consuming darkness that holds for us only questions, and few (if any) answers.

Please help them all
They are just kids
They need some truth
It’s like going back again
I can’t pretend
That I am still there again
I want to live again
I want to live again

It may ache through and through, and it may threaten to consume us whole on more than one occasion, but that’s no reason to stop “My Well” from blowing up our speakers. The latest Painted Vein song is one of his best yet, and a stunning preview of what’s to come with next month’s debut album. Stream the new song and its music video exclusively on Atwood Magazine, and stay tuned for Painted Vein’s bold, brash, and brutally beautiful full-length LP Dripping Only Black, out November 15th, 2024 via WWNBB and AWAL!
