Wake Me Up - Quarry
Wake Me Up – Quarry
Total lack of oxygen and i can’t bare to sleep
Feel the waves under my feet
Pull me in
Hit the switch that turns you on
But i don’t feel a thing
Got no air beneath my wings
Let it ring
Gone again i lost the feeling
Post to post i’m barely breathing
Dreaming i can’t see your face

Released February 26, 2021 via Epic Records/Columbia/Sony Music, “Wake Me Up” arrives as Quarry’s first single of 2021 and the lead single off the artist’s forthcoming third EP, set to release later this year. Hailing from “a small village on the outskirts of Tring” in the UK, Quarry is the artist moniker for Ash Carvell – who quite literally works at a sand quarry outside of neighboring Dunstable (hence his name, which he cites as the inspiration for his art).

Since introducing his project last year, Quarry has enjoyed a meteoric rise. The songs off his debut EP Q1 (March 6, 2020 via The Other Songs) have together garnered well over a million global streams, with runaway hits like “No_Ordinary_Love_s1e2” and “White Wishy Washy World” accentuating the artist’s dynamic vocal range alongside provocative instrumental arrangement and cool production.

Reviewing Quarry’s song “Time’s Up” last September, Atwood Magazine praised Carvell for delivering “a sleek and polished pop song full of deep grooves and raw, heated emotion.” Drawing comparisons to icons like The Weeknd and Prince as well as contemporaries like Australian soul-pop star Ruel, Quarry has the voice and songwriting talent to fill an arena: The only question is how long it will take for him to get to that part of his story. His singles have enjoyed hundreds of thousands of streams, with 2020’s “Angels & Kings” currently sitting on the cusp of 1,000,000 global streams on Spotify.

The excitement and energy continues to bubble with “Wake Me Up,” which blends visceral emotion with an expressive, rejuvenating performance. Quarry’s chorus is a sweet moment of truth as well as a source of strength:

Come wake me up
I want to feel alive
There’s darkness in your eyes
You make me feel like nobody else does
Wake me up
And feed me right back in
You’re caught beneath my skin
You make me feel like nobody else does

“’Wake Me Up’ is about feeling like there aren’t any surprises left,” Quarry tells Atwood Magazine. “Like it’s all just out of reach, hidden in the shade of the everyday nothing… It’s the numbness that creeps up on you – A mundane dance of domestic death that leaves you hoping for some great unknown to crash into your world and shake everything apart. I wrote this song looking to the past, but it resonates with me now in the future more than ever… That drive to connect with people, to feel alive! ‘Wake Me Up’ is a kick back against the darkness as much as it is a love letter to the feeling that never left.”

Arriving alongside a dynamic music video directed by James Arden & Sophia Katyea – in which Quarry “wakes up on a beach struggling to breathe and feeling the waves under his feet pull him in” – “Wake Me Up” is an enticing reintroduction to a voice we can’t wait to hear more from throughout the coming year.

Giving up on fairytales
They never calm me down
Your taste around my mouth
The only thing
Something every other day
Wish I could let you drown
Pick you up and come back round
Fill me in
