Part existential reckoning and part ethereal immersion, Magazines’ latest single is a deep dive into the self. A study of life’s grey areas, “Pink and Blue” finds the Dublin band plunging into the dream pop haze in-between shoegaze and new wave as vocalist Cath Leahy confronts the breadth and depth of the world around her, and the one within.

Can you see me?
I’m coming off the deep end.
Time is weighing me down.
I was never the type to make a difference.
So I figure that now I’ve got you close enough,
You’ll hear it with or without a
sense of knowing what I’m doing.
I’ve been moving so fast this whole time.

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Pink and Blue,” the colorful new single from Dublin four-piece Magazines. Consisting of Cath Leahy (vocals, guitar), Shayne (guitar), Tom (bass), and Dan (drums), the Irish band debuted just over a year ago with the indie rock jam “Tough,” and have been gently peppering 2020 with material as they get themselves off the ground.

Citing the likes of Wolf Alice, The Japanese House, Clairo, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, and Bombay Bicycle Club as influences, Magazines are as multifaceted as the themes they explore in their new song: A band that embraces as much overdrive and fuzz, as they do a more muted, lo-fi aesthetic. Their first three singles “Tough,” “Wet and Wild,” and “Moonlight” made for an exciting introduction earlier this year, and now the band are pushing forward with a new batch of dynamic, compelling, and slightly more polished songs.

Following September’s dreamy and tender single “Happy Alone,” “Pink and Blue” is a mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic whirlwind of sound and emotion. Leahy spills her soul over a stunning array of effected guitars and pulsing drums. The band hit their stride in a sweeping chorus:

Moving in space.
Shallow pools.
Hit like concrete.
Pink and Blue,
I’m Pink and Blue.

“When you’re younger, everything can seem pretty simple and one dimensional,” Cath Leahy tells Atwood Magazine. “But as you get older, you start to realise that nothing is as simple as you once thought. Everything has layers and people are multifaceted. That can be quite a scary realisation. It’s harder to compartmentalise and box experiences in when you get older, because you have a deeper understand that nothing is black and white. But things being grey can leave so much space for you to do whatever you want, and be whoever you want to be.

Leahy continues, “Growing up I definitely dreamed about being a musician. I dreamed about being a lot of things. But I didn’t really think I fit the “pop-star” image I was sold as a kid. In my head, a pop-star, or whatever, looked and sounded a certain way. And I never thought I really looked the part or sounded like those artists I loved. Thankfully, I don’t think that way anymore. I’ve learned to embrace who I am. So I guess ‘Pink and Blue’ is just talking about my feelings about that whole inner dialogue.”

Remember you said that

I’ve been holding my breath all this time.

Pink and Blue,

Seldom does “coming off the deep end” feel this rich in texture and self-awareness; Magazines fine the sweet spot in-between entertainment and therapy, delivering a soundtrack to those late night moments we all know and cherish – when we’re alone with our thoughts, learning more about the world through the simple act of self-reflection.

Magazines’ fifth overall song release, “Pink and Blue” is the latest in a series of tracks that showcase the emerging band’s style. Stay tuned for more from Magazines in the coming months, and stream “Pink and Blue” exclusively on Atwood Magazine.
