My idea of a queen is not necessarily linked to gender; queens come in all forms and walks of life. To me a queen embodies power and strength; they embrace all they are fiercely yet gracefully.

Here’s to all the Queens out there.

A royal song for everyday people, G Flip and mxmtoon’s new duet is a soulful, sweet, and stirring seduction. An intoxicating indie pop power anthem, “Queen” is a sweeping ode to queens all over the world – a stunning song driven by passion, full of deep grooves and smoldering vocals.

i look at her, i look at her
and i’m amazed she’s my girl
she is home
she is home away from home
in every world
even when there’s lightning
even when we’re fighting
you hold your own
nothing ever breaks you
who the fuck made you
so strong
QUEEN
im proud of my queen
QUEEN (you know)
im proud of my queen

Released January 12, 2021 via Future Classic, “Queen” is the immersive, enthralling result of a musical match made in heaven. The collaboration of Melbourne’s G Flip and Brooklyn’s mxmtoon, working with the evergreen Rostam Batmanglij (formerly of Vampire Weekend, currently Rostam) on production, feels both serendipitous and kismet: An unexpected and unlikely, but perfect combination.

Characterized by an airy, but intense sonic environment, “Queen” is a dynamic and memorable entrance for both artists into 2021. The song is the latest in a series of singles G Flip has been steadily releasing since summer 2020, which has included the effervescent “Hyperfine,” “I’D RATHER GO TO BED,” and the unapologetic LGBTQ+ love anthem “You & I” – previously praised as an “empowering, addictive love anthem full of passion, charm, and inspiring good energy.”

mxmtoon, also known by her first name Maia, had an equally bustling and impactful 2021: The Atwood artist-to-watch release two exceptional EPs in 2021, with April’s dawn followed by October’s dusk – the latter of which featured pop icon Carly Rae Jepsen on the song “ok on your own.” mxmtoon closed out 2020 with a feature on Vermont singer/songwriter Noah Kahan’s acoustic pop song “pride,” beautifully bittersweet tune that blends “the loneliness of isolation with the raw pain of rejection.”

A dramatic, heavy-hitting entrance into the new year, “Queen” sets a high bar for both G Flip and mxmtoon.

Full of pulsing, funky guitar licks and cavernous, swelling grooves (G Flip is first and foremost a drummer, and often incorporates big beats into her work), “Queen” is something of an indie pop-meets-heated R&B jam. The song’s thick bass lines are instantly reminiscent of Thriller and other Quincy Jones productions; the force with which beat hits directly impacts the intensity and emotion of the underlying music.

On top of this devastating instrumental work, overwhelming affection and intimacy permeate G Flip and mxmtoon’s vocal performances. Their passion radiates throughout “Queen,” capturing the overarching intent and heartfelt message of their lyrics.

I look at you i look at you
and i’m amazed at all you do
and when you’re near when you’re here
i feel so brave so brave
even when there’s lightning
even when we’re fighting
you hold your own
nothing ever breaks you
who the fuck made you
so strong

“‘Queen’ was written about the strong women around me, the queens that raised me and the queens I’ve met through my years,” G Flip tells Atwood Magazine. “My idea of a queen is not necessarily linked to gender; queens come in all forms and walks of life. To me a queen embodies power and strength; they embrace all they are fiercely yet gracefully. The song was written one sunny day in LA, I was chillin on Rostam’s lovely white couch and he turned around to me and said, “How about we write a song about Queens?” and I replied with, ‘F@!K yeah!‘”

“I’m also super stoked to have mxmtoon on the track with me, she is an absolute queen. I first was introduced to her when I was trying to find ukulele chords to a Khalid song and found her cover on YouTube years ago. She makes awesome music and her voice has such a cruisy timbre to it so I was thrilled to have her jump on Queen with me. She is also an avid croc lover and part of the LGBTQIA+ community, so obviously it just made sense!”

mxmtoon shares similar sentiments about the song and overall collaboration. “She and Rostam were such a joy to work with and so much fun to collaborate with on creative as well,” Maia says. “I’m so glad that it’s still possible to make art and music with someone even when they’re on the other side of the world, and I’m lucky that I got the opportunity to feature on G’s song. “Queen” is a power anthem for any person, and I’m so excited for people to love it as much as we do!”

This is what deep love sounds like.

Aching and irresistible, “Queen” stuns on impact. It’s a soaring, visceral way to express your truest emotions, and a song we’ll surely be listening to for years to come. G Flip and mxmtoon have started 2021 off with an undulating, soaring bang!, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Just as the artists said, this song is for anybody and everybody who wants it: Own your inner queen, and let your soul shine.

QUEEN
i’m proud of my queen
QUEEN (you know)
i’m proud of my queen
you should be told that
you need to know that
you should be told that
you are a QUEEN
