Breakup songs are fun, but emotionally turbulent reveries are irresistible. Released February 25, 2022, “Haircut” is a clean and crisp stadium-sized eruption. Griff Clawson’s first single of the year finds the Los Angeles based artist taking a hard look in the metaphorical and literal mirrors as the past haunts his present. He manifests his grief through a cool, cinematic pop production and an up-close and personal vocal performance that aches in all the right ways.

“’Haircut’ is a pivotal song for me,” Clawson tells Atwood Magazine. “‘Haircut’ is a song for everyone that’s ever had something specific remind them of someone else. The lyrics are dead honest and every time I get a haircut I’m reminded of someone I used to have a relationship with – hence why I procrastinated getting a haircut for over a year during the pandemic!” he laughs.
“‘Haircut’ is about not knowing how and when to let go of something when your story with somebody feels unfinished. This was also the first time a song poured out of me and came together without the guidance of any co-writers or producers, and I take pride in the experience of being able to talk this story and feeling out of myself.”

“Haircut” longs for reconnection, but also some kind of catharsis and closure – especially if there’s no hope for saving their relationship. The music’s strong, polished backbeat creates a constantly forward-pushing momentum, and Clawson’s emotional, layered voice makes it feel like we’re all alone in the room with just him and his feelings. “Can you tell me something… was it all for nothing?” he asks in the chorus. It’s a legitimate question to ask of your ex, and yet here, it feels like Clawson is singing straight into the void.
Unfinished though his story may be, “Haircut” is the full package – and likewise, it’s sure to leave listeners refreshed and renewed. His heart may be on the mend, but the future looks bright for Griff Clawson.
