The 1975 dive in and out of safety with their new single, “Part Of The Band,” surrounding pockets of emotion with caricatured voices from the internet. Matty Healy effortlessly spins bravado into vulnerability, buoyed by the complex instrumental layerings of Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald, and George Daniel.

Out July 7, 2022 via Dirty Hit, “Part of the Band” is The 1975’s first single following the release of their critically acclaimed fourth album, 2020’s Notes on a Conditional Form. This song shows the Manchester band evolving in nuance and production skill since their eponymous debut album in 2013. With Jack Antonoff helping with the track, the result puts on display his characteristic bold saxophone lines and disjointed string sections to carve out a unique space within the genre.

I was living my best life, living with my parents
Way before the paying penance
and verbal propellants

And my, my, my cancellations, hm, yeah

Driving cello runs and easy rhymes begin shifting and growing as the song’s subject fights with the tides of culture and his own beliefs. At times he belittles himself: “And I fell in love with a boy, it was kinda lame.” Until the haze of external voices call, “You gotta talk about the people, baby.”

So many cringes in the heroin binges
I was coming off the hinges, living on the fringes
Of my, my, my imagination, oh, yeah
Enough about me now
“You gotta talk about the people, baby”
(But that’s kind of the idea)

The crux of the song; the harshness of the previous lines melts into a sensitive, expansive moment, where a man mourns the world’s judgments, where he can’t help but love those who love him.

At home, somewhere I don’t like
Eating stuff off of motorbikes
Coming to her lookalikes
I can’t get the language right
Just tell me what’s unladylike

And in that moment, as the listener sinks into that resolution, the song hardens, rebounding into bitterness towards “Vaccinista tote bag chic baristas.” You wonder whether there is redemption, in the cycles of judgment and care.

The worst inside of us begets
That feeling on the internet
It’s like someone intended it
(Like advertising cigarettes)
It’s kind of my daily iteration

As we feel hopelessly lost in the negativity of internet conversation, reading of hopeless situations, this single presents only a glimmer of a solution:

Am I ironically woke?
The butt of my joke?

Or am I just some post-coke, average, skinny bloke?
Calling his ego imagination
I’ve not picked up that in a thousand four hundred days
And nine hours and sixteen minutes, babe

The denial of ego, and the recognition of others’ individualities, are all themes that could be built on in their upcoming album. And with this new sound, fans are expecting big things.
