Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Would You Be Mine,” the stunning second single of the year from Yorta Yorta/Wangaratta-based artist and producer MOZË – her fifth career song release. Arriving on the heels of May’s groovy, smoldering, disco-ready dance-pop single “Albert St.” (which was red-hot in a very different way), “Would You Be Mine” highlights MOZË’s predilection for balladry – a realm she’s proven time and again to be her not-so-secret superpower.
Produced by MOZË herself and ARIA Award Winning producer Stephen Mowet (PEZ, Ali Barter), “Would You Be Mine” is a brooding, melancholy slow-burner, sung from the perspective of someone longing to be loved. “Would you let me love you, and fall right in?” she sings in the second verse, getting straight to the point with her unseen subject. “I will show you… where I’ve been.”

A heavy piano and charged drums lay an immersive, intoxicating foundation, upon which MOZË pours her heart and soul through her deeply emotive lyrics and searing, spellbinding vocal performance. The anthems and pop songs may be more “fun” at times, but this ballad is, without a doubt, the Aussie artist’s strongest performance yet: An unfiltered and unapologetic showcase of her pure talents. She inhabits the world of this heart-aching romantic, embodying an all-too familiar feeling of being so close, yet so far away from your special someone.
Or rather, the idea of your someone special – for in this song’s case, it’s all just make-believe; a figment of her imagination.
“I wanted the writing to be fantastical and passionate because in the end the love story is only a daydream,” MOZË tells Atwood Magazine. “The love doesn’t exist, but the expectation and the hope for it does.”

In short, this is MOZË’s attempt at bringing to life the archetype of love – and damn, if she hasn’t succeeded on all fronts. Of course, the only thing better than an archetype is the real thing, and there’s a big difference between having loving and not having it. We feel the weight of love’s absence throughout her song, and it’s even more pronounced in the “Would You Be Mine” music video, directed, produced and edited by Annabel Mactaggart, and also edited by Melissa Nicholson.
In the video, we watch as dancers Sarah Whiter and Phoenix Rowe intertwine and disentangle, with Rowe often acting as a vessel for support for Whiter’s movements; he disappears for a time as she dances on her own, and we feel what that lack of another body means for Whiter’s dancing; she has the spotlight to herself, but has far fewer tools, poses, and movements at her disposal. Upon his return, the pair coalesce in a seductive climax that celebrates their union, with that deeper inner connection powerfully depicted through the duo’s own sheer physicality.
MOZË sees the visual as an enhancement of her song; she calls it “the dream state of a young woman, exploring the journey of reminiscing on past trust, ultimately depicts a universal experience: the private romanticization of lovers who are no longer in our lives.”
