This song is meant to inspire and empower; I think of it as my own personal female anthem.
There is nothing quite as exciting as new love, and few better ways to express that than in song. For Canadian pop act A Is For Arrows, young love shines through a sweet array of glistening guitars and cool synths. The band’s new song “Go Slow” is an effervescent, self-assured expression of cool confidence going into a new romance – highlighting independence and individuality through the band’s buoyant, fresh tones.
Hey Lover i’m gonna
turn the lights out on us
you know you talk too much
Lover, let me be first to shut you up
lips like cocaine, gateway drugs
lover i’m gonna turn the lights out on us
not the girl you thought I was
lover, this is Friday love, no Sunday crush
see you when the sun comes up
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Go Slow,” A Is for Arrows’ third release since debuting in late 2019. The Toronto synth-pop duo consisting of multi-instrumentalists Alessia Balasbas (vocals) and guitarist Eric Robbs (guitar), and produced by produced by Joel Stouffer (bülow, Dragonette, Ria Mae), A Is for Arrows introduced themselves late last year through the pulsing song “Without You” and followed that up earlier this year with the delicate, propulsive “Roses.”
“Go Slow” is the brightest offering yet from the synth-pop group, a cute and buoyant track full of life and catchy energy. With a sonic palette most similar to lighter folk pop acts like Smith & Thell and The National Parks, “Go Slow” is engaging and authentic – just the kind of pop song we’re looking for during these difficult times.
For the band, “Go Slow” goes far deeper than the skin, speaking to individual confidence and being vulnerable with romance – a trait that doesn’t come easy to most. “I like to think that on a very rare occasion, I can be the confident person that I envision in my head,” Alessia Balasbas tells Atwood Magazine. “‘Go Slow’ is that song for me. It’s the mirror image of the scared and insecure human looking back; it’s the self-assured, self-aware and fearless version of self. The one that doesn’t take no for an answer, the girl that will go up to anyone in anyplace and have a conversation and not because they aren’t afraid, but because they stare their fears in the face and go right through. This song is meant to inspire and empower; I think of it as my own personal female anthem. It’s fun, it’s light hearted, it’s confident, but it also has this layer of vulnerability.”
Lots of synth-pop gets lost in a deluge of CHVRCHES and Smallpools soundalikes, but not A Is for Arrows; driven by Balasbas’ expressive, slippery voice and Eric Robbs’ clean, tight guitar work, the band make quick work of setting themselves apart from the pack. Balasbas’ voice bounces out of “Go Slow” with tremendous force, hitting the years with an immediacy that feels as if she’s right there in the room with you.
It’s this kind of personal touch that makes “Go Slow” a winner: Light yet intense, fun but serious, the song wants to help us feel good, and maybe offer a little inspiration in the process.
