Tender and turbulent, fragile and robust, acoustic and electronic, TALIA’s new single isn’t so much a study in opposites, as it is a marriage of them. An immersion and an escape all in one, “lilac” is a world of wonder unto itself: A soul-stirring indie pop fever dream that finds solace in solitude and refuge in reflection as the artist shares her innermost self with the world.

lilac – TALIA
Lilac lily stupid
Daydreams wasting all my
Time and money dancing
Getting dizzy
Can’t stop moving
I want to get in the car
Drive where nobody else knows my name
Got a couple missed calls
Smash my phone against the wall
Keeps me sane
Feel the gravity fall
Better off on my own anyway
Try to compensate your love
Forget you knew me at all

Independently released July 28, 2023, “lilac” is an achingly intimate, beautifully raw song of introspective reckoning. TALIA’s third single of the year finds the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter, producer, and filmmaker capturing a powerful moment of evolution through music as she channels a wealth of turbulent thoughts and feelings through poetic lyrics and stunning sonics.

Written and co-produced with Joep Le Blanc (Ashnikko, Slinger) while recording her new project in The Netherlands, “lilac” finds balance between serenity and unrest. “I want to get in the car, drive where nobody else knows my name,” TALIA sings, spilling her soul against a light, lilting backdrop as she yearns to escape the weight and woes of her present. “Got a couple missed calls, smash my phone against the wall, keeps me sane… feel the gravity fall, better off on my own anyway.”

The music intensifies alongside her vocal performance, with overdriven guitars adding new weight to an already tense situation:

Picturing your face in the back of my brain
My baby a stranger but I love her all the same
Had to leave your side

Guess that I’m the one to blame
Never satisfied
Guess that I’m the one to blame
(Forget you knew me at all)

“I feel like I’m constantly evolving as a person and artist,” TALIA tells Atwood Magazine. “Sometimes it feels lonely going through changes and re-discovering who you are. ‘lilac’ is a journey through multiple parts of myself in the last few years, from daydreams to solitude to love and heartache. For me, the lyrics capture the bittersweetness of growing up.”

“I wrote and co-produced it with my friend Joep Le Blanc. We were working on a bunch of songs in The Netherlands and I wanted to make something that felt dynamic and expansive. I was really inspired by the idea of blending acoustic and electronic sounds. The strings in the outro are probably my favorite part because it feels like a catharsis or release of the past selves you leave behind in order to grow into the person you’re meant to be.”
