It’s kind of like a journal of all the places that me and this person used to go to together and things we did, which all really shaped my teenage years.

A colorful indie rock song awash in nostalgia, Coconut Cream’s first release of the year is as fun to sink into as it is to sway with. Dynamic and dazzling, “Your Drug on Computers” dwells in a valley of young love and youthful innocence as Coconut Cream deliver a spellbinding, rose-colored, pop-laced journey down memory lane. A wellspring of potent emotion and feverish sound, it’s a radiant good time for all.

Tennis players at a house party
I didn’t know right from wrong
You’ve got an ego and perfect eyesight
Double take as I walk indoors
And you came to a show
And you stood in the front row
We walked down Enmore Road
Every afternoon in the cold

Released April 22, 2021 via Joji Malani’s indie label Broth Records, “Your Drug On Computers” is a thrill for the mind and an indulgence for the ears all at once. Following July 2020’s standalone single “Fairy Bread” (itself the follow-up to 2019’s debut EP Out of Touch), “Your Drug On Computers” finds Coconut Cream reveling with driving guitars, vibrant beats and impassioned vocals full of feeling. The Sydney four-piece of Astari Mudana, Jasmine Tan, Chad Kennedy and Oscar Saran, Coconut Cream liken themselves to Stella Donnelly, Ruby Fields, and Jay Som with their catchy, uplifting and energetic brand of indie rock.

Energy is certainly the keyword for “Your Drug On Computers,” which rises to an exhilarating chorus as Astari Mudana ventures into a sweet, sentimental, smile-inducing memory:

Listening to Your Drug on computers
I was enough to be your muse
But the bus broke down in Double Bay
We walked home even though it was a long way

“It’s kind of like a journal of all the places that me and this person used to go to together and things we did, which all really shaped my teenage years” Astari shares. “Your Drug’ is actually the name of a Saskwatch song that I listened to a lot with someone when I was around 17. Whenever I hear the song now it takes me back to significant moments when I was younger so it’s still very sentimental to me.”

“I wrote ‘Your Drug On Computers’ about my first relationship when I was 17,” Astari tells Atwood Magazine. “I think when you are in your teenage years there are already so many emotions running high that when you first fall in love it feels like the most intense thing especially when you know that it probably won’t last forever.”

“I remember this Saskwatch song playing off my computer on Spotify one day after school and listening to it with this particular person, and I remember thinking it was the saddest song I’d ever heard. The line that always sticks out to me is in the outro with the lyric, ‘I’m not ready for love, not ready for life without you,’ combined with this intensely beautiful instrumental. Now when I listen back on the song it reminds me of that particular time in my life and takes me back to that feeling of being young and infatuated and I think thats super incredible that a song can do that.”

Red leaf pool
You thought I looked so cool
In a tshirt in the cereal aisle
Haven’t thought about you in a while
Took a train with empty seats
Out to your house, it’s 40 degrees
Never been so far gone before
And I didn’t want to let go
Listening to Your Drug on computers
I was enough to be your muse
But the bus broke down in Double Bay
We walked home even though it was a long way

Young love has a tenderness about it, and that quality certainly shines through Coconut Cream’s performance as they evoke the immediacy and passion of two teens embarking on that journey of self-discovery and intimate connection. More than anything, though, “Your Drug on Computers” affirms Coconut Cream as one of Sydney’s most exciting, fresh-faced acts; since forming at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the band have amassed a growing following in two years’ time. Their new music hints that their best is still to come; and while we wait for news of forthcoming EPs or albums, we encourage you to spend your time getting lost in the rollicking guitars, emotive vocals, pulsing drums, and waves of effervescent charm that Coconut Cream seamlessly create, for our enjoyment as much as for their own.

I see you all the time but I’m dreaming
You told me you were young and didn’t mean it
But you and I were easy just like breathing
So I go back time and time again
Listening to Your Drug on computers
I was enough to be your muse
But the bus broke down in Double Bay
We walked home even though it was a long way
