I don’t wanna stay here, but no matter where I end up it’s in your harm…

A fever; a passion; a raw reflection; a reckoning. Urgency radiates throughout Loviet’s dazzling new single: An unabating undercurrent of fierce, emotionally charged energy pushing the artist and her music forward into a future unknown.

An exhilarating indie pop upheaval, “Broken Lips” is a visceral, cinematic anthem of soul-searching and inner release. It’s the smoldering soundtrack to recognizing and breaking out of our cycles, replete with churning beats, sweeping sonics, and a resounding chorus of yearning and redemption. Are we just holding on? Are we hanging up?

Broken Lips - Loviet
Broken Lips – Loviet
Merciless, I shoulda called it quits
But you can take ‘em with just your fists
Broken lips, I wasn’t holding this
The way I should have been
I should relish in all the good we’re doing
But my pessimistic heart was set for ruin

Released September 9, 2022, “Broken Lips” is Loviet’s first single of 2022 and the direct follow-up to last year’s debut album, 777. The moniker for Nova Scotia-born, Toronto-based artist Natalie Lynn, Loviet (pronounced like ‘Soviet’), first formally introduced her project with the songs “Symbol of Love” and “One” in 2019. Heavily influenced by ’80s dance pop and citing everyone from HAIM and The 1975 to The Killers, Pale Waves, and Paramore as influences, Loviet’s music shines with limitless warmth and authenticity. Self-describing her work as “polished but chipped pop/rock,” her sound fits seamlessly into the worlds of fellow Canadian Carly Rae Jepsen and pop superstar Taylor Swift: Feverish and immersive, Loviet uplifts and inspires with effortless grace.

A longtime favorite and two-time Editor’s Pick here on Atwood Magazine, Loviet has cemented herself as one of the indie pop world’s brightest stars.

In premiering her debut EP Everyone Knows The Thrill When It’s Over in 2020, Atwood praised her music as a burst of buoyant indie pop brimming with light and tender feeling and a rollercoaster ride through the highs and lows of love. “Savor this moment,” we wrote at the time. “There are certain musical discoveries we never forget, and for this writer, Loviet is one of them. Musical magic in a bottle, this artist is destined to do great things; in fact, she already has.”

777 - Loviet
Loviet’s “irresistibly catchy” debut album 777, released in November 2021

Lynn made good on her debut EP’s promise with 777, an irresistibly catchy seven-track debut album that she herself described as “nostalgic, cathartic, and honest”: Full of coming-of-age reflections and exhilarating moments of truth, it represented (and continues to represent) Loviet’s full-fledged come-up – housing her hopes, dreams, fears, flaws, and all.

777 remains a remarkable listening experience, but Lynn and Loviet’s work is far from over.  The artist teamed up with Cacie Dalager and Bradley Hale from another of our favorite indie pop bands, Now Now, to produce her upcoming project – an EP entitled The Nighttime Is All In The Timing, which she describes genre fluid, with “lots of guitars, energy, power, and mess.”

We can certainly feel all that and more as “Broken Lips” reaches its climax in an impassioned, emotional chorus. Loviet holds nothing back as she sings her heart out:

How we gonna make it
Breath is bated and already falling apart
Always pick me up take me home

I become the person I swore I’m not
And it’s killing us killing us
Are we hanging up hanging up
I don’t wanna stay here
But no matter where I end up it’s in your harm

“Broken Lips” is the first teaser off this new record, and a taste of what’s to come. With a smoldering, synth-soaked beat in the driver’s seat, Loviet’s new song builds upon the sonic identity she’s developed for herself over the past few years, albeit with an even deeper pulse and a refreshingly fierce roar. Taking certain inspiration from ’80s dance pop and new wave, “Broken Lips” bridges the gap between slow-burner and searing, soaring anthem: Imagine a refined blend of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” and John Parr’s “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion),” with a little anxiety and existential crises thrown in for added spice.

For Loviet, this is without a doubt the start of a bold new chapter.

“Without giving away too much on this song’s origins or the meaning, I’ll just say it feels very personal and kind of anthemic to a cycle, or breaking one,” the artist tells Atwood Magazine. “I know I carry a lot of tension, and when things are overcoming me it manifests in different ways.”

“I was in an Uber coming home (masks still on at this point) and by the end of the 20 minute ride when I took my mask off, I found that I had chewed my lip unknowingly ‘til it was raw and bloody. It was kind of just a crazy moment of realization how vacant I must have been, and that we never know our thresholds ’til we meet them.”

And the worst is on purpose
You made me feel worthless for no reason
And the voice in my head said I deserve it and I just believe it
How we gonna make it
Breath is bated and already falling apart
Always pick me up take me home

I become the person I swore I’m not
And it’s killing us killing us
Are we hanging up hanging up
I don’t wanna stay here
But no matter where I end up it’s in your harm
