Go right back to your old ways, you’ve learned not to look sideways…

One of the main differences between an addiction and an obsession or other kind of dependency is that the addiction persists, despite harmful consequences. We all have passions and fixations; we all have skeletons in our closet, some of which we can easily control and others of which we do our best to handle. Most of the time, these passions are relatively harmless and benign. We often don’t notice the shift occurring until it’s too late, when what was once an innocent interest is already untethered and out of control. Pennsylvania duo Sadurday capture the all-consuming weight and intensity of vice and addiction in their feverish new single “Sideways,” an unapologetic upheaval of searing grunge.

Prefer to be alone, you’re a quiet man
You’re over taking notes but it’s just pretend
You only ever do it on the weekends
But now you’re feeling nauseous as your needs bend
Go right back to your old ways,
you’ve learned not to look sideways
Hold you down, hold you down,
hold you down and now you can’t get out

Hands are bound, hands are bound,
hands are bound and now you can’t get out

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Sideways,” the second single taken off Sadurday’s forthcoming EP, Nothing 2 Celebrate (independently out October 21, 2022). The Pennsylvania-based duo of vocalist/guitarist Annie Jean Linn and multi-instrumentalist Nick Comanici, Sadurday left an instant imprint on the ears with their project’s lead single “Mary,” released in late September and named one of Atwood Magazine‘s Editor’s Picks. “Falling in-between My Chemical Romance and Nirvana, Sadurday are fresh and ferocious,” Atwood previously wrote. “The alternative-grunge duo make achingly intense, unapologetically dramatic music with a catchy flare.”

Like Brooklyn band Superbloom, Sadurday are ushering in a wave of seething, soul-stirring grunge and ’90s alternative rock for the next generation. Their music aches with raw reeling; from the moment it begins, “Sideways” lurches forward with a sense of urgency and unsettling skittishness. It’s as though the band have captured not only the feelings of addiction, but the very state of being itself:

Drowning all your dreams in a warm bath
Think of all the things that you can’t have
Do you only cry when you can’t laugh?
Expecting me to cave and I hate that
Go right back to your old ways,
you’ve learned not to look sideways
Hold you down, hold you down, hold you down
now you can’t get out
Hands are bound, hands are bound, hands are bound
now you can’t get out

The more “Sideways” disturbs or alarms its listeners, the more Sadurday will feel they’ve done their job. “It’s about someone not being able to break away from something that is harmful, and what that thing is can be left to interpretation,” Sadurday’s Annie Jean Linn says of the song. “We all have our vices, and some are unfortunately more dangerous and consuming than others.”

Hello? Are you there?
Can’t pick up? Do you care?
Hello? Are you there?
Can’t pick up? Do you care?
Do you care?

With its heavy churn and Linn’s captivating, visceral vocals, “Sideways” channels our vices into a grunge-fueled thriller.
