Love is in the air as Lana Nauphal’s debut single gets underway.

It starts with a spark: That first moment of electricity and connection that gets our hair raised and our blood pumping. A world of potential is suddenly unlocked, and we find our minds drifting, wandering, and daydreaming about a new crush – a love interest – a fresh start. It’s day one; there’s no baggage, no preconceptions, no weight; just endless possibility for a future as yet undiscovered. Everything lies ahead, and there’s so much left to explore.

If you’re feeling butterflies in your stomach, you’re not alone. Lana Nauphal captures the excitement of falling in love for the first time in her debut single “Oh He Oh My,” a sweet and smile-inducing folk song full of butterflies.

Oh he, oh my
I’m trying to hide
The love I feel creeping up on me
Oh he, oh my
Have you ever seen a guy
So knowing of the space he’s holding up?

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Oh He Oh My,” Lana Nauphal’s “official” debut and the lead single taken off her forthcoming debut album, Wildland (out in May 2024). Driven by sprightly acoustic guitar strums and bright drums – all of which surround and support Nauphal’s rich and radiant voice – “Oh He Oh My” proves an instantly irresistible introduction to the New York City-based singer/songwriter.

Somehow you’ve got me reeling
Feeling some kind of way
I’m searching for a reason
Not to have you anyway

“I have a very distinct memory of writing ‘Oh He Oh My,'” Nauphal tells Atwood Magazine. “It was the spring of my sophomore year of college, and I sat, bored out of my mind, in an Intro to Linguistics class I couldn’t remember why I’d signed up for. I had just met this exciting new person and his crazy group of friends and we were staying up all night, getting to know one another, playing music and Beerio-Kart until the early hours.”

“As my professor droned on about morphemes, I zoned out, and started doodling in my margins – those doodles quickly turned into lyrics, and I found myself rushing to the bathroom, iPhone in hand, to record the tune that had just jumped into my head. The professor–so enamored with himself and his lectures – didn’t even bat an eye when I walked back into the classroom 20 minutes later, ‘Oh He Oh My’ completed.”

Oh my, oh he
Baby one two three
I’m counting all the ways you make me feel
Oh he, oh me
What a pair I’m dying to be
Be my night I’ll be your day call me at three

“Oh He Oh My” is not only a first look at Lana Nauphal, but it’s also a sneak peak at what’s in store for listeners on her forthcoming full-length record – a ten-track exploration of love (and love’s loss) inspired by her time as a pre-law student at Georgetown University, from which she graduated just a few years ago.

Wildland has a lot to do with falling in love for the first time – with a person, a group of friends, a way of living and being and creating, with myself,” she says. “While the album mostly chronicles the painful fall out of such a love, “Oh He Oh My” is the only song written during that hopeful, light-hearted, the-future-is-still-ahead-of-us period. Evidently, it didn’t last very long.”

Still searching for that reason
Not to lay out on the line
But such a reason
Is proving itself too hard to find
Someday I’ll get out of this mess…
Someday I’ll get out of this mess…

Evoking beloved artist like Ingrid Michaelson and She & Him (the duo led by Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), Lana Nauphal is, intentionally or not, filling a much-needed gap in the current folk-pop space. Her first release is warm, inviting, and effortlessly catchy; if “Oh He Oh My” proves something of a standard, then we’ll surely be falling for the entirety of Wildland in no time at all.

Stream Lana Nauphal’s first single exclusively on Atwood Magazine, and stay tuned for more as she continues to tease her upcoming album, out in May 2024!
