I want it, you have it too, beautiful blur…
Life is too precious and too fleeting to be spent in a haze.
And yet, so many of us are living in the blur. Be it the fog of substance use, of partying, or even of work, we all fall prey to distractions and detractors that throw us off-balance, disconnecting the body from the mind and the spirit. It takes real work to pull ourselves out of these funks and recenter ourselves, but the very first step is simply recognition of the problem – and on her latest, dreamy single, Izzy Outerspace dwells in that “Beautiful Blur,” baring her aching soul for all to see, hear, and feel as she search for meaning in the darkness.
i want it, you have it too
beautiful blur
i want it, take me too
high… high
make me forget it
oh do i regret it
spirit carry
all my weight
i can almost taste it
in this thin air
don’t get me wasted
you will forget it too
Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering “Beautiful Blur,” the latest intoxicating single from Los Angeles-based indie pop artist Izzy Outerspace. The moniker for Switzerland-born singer/songwriter Isabelle Baumgartner, Izzy Outerspace has been immersing our ears in lush, spellbinding worlds for four years now. She cites artists like Damien Rice and Jeff Buckley as among her primary inspiraton, pulling further inspiration from ’90s German rock and Brit Pop.
While Izzy Outerspace’s two studio albums (2020’s Amazon and 2022’s Caught) are the best longform introductions to her enchanting artistry, her 2024 output has been particularly special; four years into her career, the artist has made a headfirst dive into the dream pop world, and the results do not disappoint – starting with this past May’s four-track Lip Service EP, and now bleeding further into “Beautiful Blur,” which stays true to its name from a sonic, lyrical, and emotional perspective. Produced by ex-Smashing Pumpkins’ member Jeff Schroeder, “Beautiful Blur” is the first of a two-song EP set to release before year’s end.
“Partly I wrote the song for my brother Patrick, who is an addict, and is still struggling, and the feelings of helplessness that come with that,” Baumgartner tells Atwood Magazine. “The song is also about the parting with relationships I had in my 20s, partying and being light… the lyric ‘don’t get me wasted, you will forget it, too’ hints at the fleetingness of these experiences and the search for meaning.”
“I brought this song to Jeff, and he helped me really bring it to life,” she adds. “I love the fuzzy bass line to underline the heavy lyrics the chorus feels like a great opening/release. Jeff added a beautiful ambient guitar solo. This song is part of a two song EP produced by Jeff, which I’m excited to share later. The song was recorded at The Cave in LA, and mixed and mastered by Josiah Mazzaschi.”
i’m breathless
carry my weight
spill it over
all my faith
i can almost taste it
it in this thin air
don’t get me wasted
you will forget it too
Izzy Outerspace takes her time to build and bask in the world she creates on “Beautiful Blur,” beckoning her audience to join in her cathartic musical daydream.
It’s an intense, invigorating, and irresistible affair, and one that forces us to consider our own state at this juncture. Are our minds, bodies, and spirits in sync? Are we heading in the right direction – whatever that means for us? Or do we need to stop; do we need to slow down and recenter, rebalance, and reorient ourselves?
The songs that pose more questions than answers are the ones that prove not just helpful in the moment, but ultimately timeless – and “Beautiful Blur” is certainly something to celebrate and cherish.
