I don’t fit the mold, I’ve never been afraid of growing old…

There’s an undeniable electricity surrounding Modern Love Child’s dynamic indie pop music. The moniker for Connecticut-born, LA-based Jonny Shane, Modern Love Child embraces individuality in his unabashed and unapologetic new single “In a City,” a restless and driving pop/rock rendering of city life.

I start my day on 86 and Lex
I make my way downtown on the 4 express
I see a Spanish girl in a red dress,
She’s got big brown eyes looking for sex
And all these hipsters are trying too hard
All the yuppies stare at my guitar
I see a banker with his perfect life,
He’s got all the money, that money can buy
Well it’s getting really hard to dream
In a city that never sleeps

Atwood Magazine is proud to be premiering the single and music video for “In a City,” Modern Love Child’s exuberant new anthem for those struggle to fit in. “The song was inspired by a trip I had to NYC to see my family and friends,” the artist explains. “At that time in my life, I felt really lost. Everyone else’s life seemed perfect and I felt left out, hence the line, ‘I don’t fit the mold.’ Essentially, it seemed like everyone had it all figured out and I was still just this ‘dreamer in the streets, in a city that never sleeps.’ The song also represents some internal struggle, there is the line, ‘Maybe I should move to the suburbs, find a significant other, because a white picket fence is the best defense against the world outside,’ That’s basically thinking to myself, ‘Maybe I should just settle down and live a normal life. I’m certain most people can relate as we all tend feel a bit left out sometimes.”

I don’t fit the mold, I’ve never been afraid of growing old
I find out where I am, when it’s 3am
and I don’t know where to go

I’m just trying to land on my feet,
but I’m never quite up to speed,
I find out who I am when it’s 3am

The last dreamer in streets
In a city, that never sleeps
In a city, that never sleeps.

The latest single off Modern Love Child’s debut album (set for release in October 2019 via Believe Music) offers the perfect insider’s look at outside living – not by choice, but by necessity: “I don’t fit the mold, I’ve never been afraid of growing old,” the artist sings in an impassioned chorus, sparks of lively energy radiating off his guitar and vocals. The song’s accompanying music video finds the artist playing out a realistic tiff with one’s parents. It’s establishment versus progressive, a classic/contemporary clash that speaks to some of the song’s best (and most relatable) imagery:

I see my family on the Upper East Side
I’m underdressed and they think I’m high
They ask about the songs I write
We’re all related, so I keep it light
Well it’s getting really hard to dream
In a city that never sleeps

While it could have dwelled in the corner, “In a City” instead embraces a rush of excitement and electricity. Modern Love Child sings unrestrained in his rejection of traditional tropes, familial and societal expectations; he isn’t inspired by the life folks want for him, so much as he is moved by the one he’ll trailblaze for himself. With that vision paving the way forward, “In a City” truly is an anthem for the lost, the counter-culture, the alternative, and everything else that doesn’t “fit the mold.” Stream “In a City” exclusively on Atwood Magazine, and stay tuned for Modern Love Child’s promising debut album!
