‘Red Room’ is a bit of an exploration of dying and what that means for living. There sometimes feels like there’s so much time, and then other times not. We just want to seize the day now.
Living through a pandemic changes you.
It moves you to live more consciously in the moment and teaches you that life is fleeting; that time is our greatest asset of all, but it’s also the most mysterious. If you want to do something, do it now. If you want to say something to someone, tell them now. Don’t wait; there’s no way of knowing how much time you’ve got left.
This is the new kind of urgency with which many of us are now living our lives, and this is the urgency underpinning Twilight Driving’s latest single. A captivating indie pop anthem brimming with passion, purpose, and charged emotion, “Red Room” dwells on life’s ticking clock as Twilight Driving inspire us to seize the day and make the most of the present moment. It’s a roaring, explosive embrace of the here and now – sensitive to the bigger picture, while trying to not to let our feelings – or our precious seconds – go to waste.
I met you at a party
I think you weren’t honest with me
When you said you loved the song
that was playing above our heads.
And I found you kinda funny,
A little bit shy but so was I
When you took my username
I hoped we’d meet again.
But time’s whimsical,
Moves hips in semi-circles,
I better call you up…
Independently released August 13, 2021, “Red Room” arrives this summer as a sun-kissed burst of charming sound and wondrous energy. It’s the first official single of the year for Twilight Driving, the Brighton-based band who have deftly lit up our ears with single after glowing single in recent years. The four-piece of George Gleeson, Will Mavin, Aidan Chadwick, and Danny Lawrence have established themselves as an artist-to-watch in England’s southern coastal region: With stadium-sized, reverb-drenched guitar licks and bombastic, catchy choruses, it’s hard to deny Twilight Driving’s allure. “Red Room” is the band’s tenth lifetime single since debuting in September 2017 with the Killers-esque “Soft & Pink,” following on from last October’s “Pretty in Pink” and the recently-released three-track acoustic EP, Riverside Sessions.
Anyone who’s lingered too heavily on their own mortality ultimately feels a rush wash over them: An immediacy to act now (or forever hold your peace); a clamoring to get things done, bolstered by some innate inner resolve to be as present in the present as one can be. It’s the drive to exist – and even more specifically, to make something out of that existence. As “Red Room” tells a story of chance encounters and missed opportunities, Twilight Driving commit to taking action and living with fewer regrets. The band comes to life in a dazzling, emotive chorus that lays it all on the line:
Deep behind the dark,
There’s a red room calling
Our names, there’s no use in cutting corners.
Till the end. There’s so much space left between,
You and me baby, it’s destined
Till the Red Room calls me!
“Red Room” is particularly timely with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but even in its absence, the song would strike a nerve.
“We’ve been thinking a lot lately about life and what to do with our time here,” Twilight Driving tell Atwood Magazine. “‘Red Room’ is a bit of an exploration of dying and what that means for living. There sometimes feels like there’s so much time, and then other times not. We just want to seize the day now.”
Bumped into you at college,
It must’ve of been your final exam that year,
you had this look like the eye of a hurricane.
I took you for coffee,
I guess it was dull for a date day,
But I tried my best and that dress was a giveaway.
But time seems to go,
Leads lips to poor decisions,
I better call you up…
Of course, “Red Room” isn’t a song about death; it’s a song about living our lives to their greatest potential. It’s about wearing your true self on your sleeve; of making a move before it’s too late – telling someone how you really feel, before you go your separate ways forever. Twilight Driving have returned with an irresistible anthem we can sing at the top of our lungs – one that resonates deep inside, while giving us the release we’ve all been longing for.
Stream the song below, and stay tuned for more from this talented band in the months to come. Here’s to hoping an album is finally on the way!
Deep behind the dark,
There’s a red room calling
Our names, there’s no use in cutting corners.
Till the end. There’s so much space left to see,
You and me baby, it’s destined,
Till the Red Room calls me!
Deep behind the dark,
There’s a red room calling
Our names, there’s no use in cutting corners.
Till the end. There’s so much space left to see
Till the Red Room calls me!
